Decluttering is a spring cleaning must for me and I find that my household runs better when there is less stuff in it. If this rule applies to our living spaces shouldn\’t it apply to our business websites too? A streamlined, clutter-free site can help your customers find information and products easily while making them likely to spend more time on your site and revisit it in the future. While it may seem intimidating at first, these 5 easy steps to basic website organizational design your website can make the task as simple as cleaning those windows.
1. Add Social Profiles
While this task isn’t necessarily decluttering per say, it plays an important role in keeping your site current and functional – the ultimate goals of any good spring cleaning strategy. Make sure to add your social profiles such as Facebook and Google+ to your site. Also have your pages pre-designed to include these profile links each time a new page is created.
2. Out with the Old – In with the New
Time to do some serious website purging. Remove from your site outdated products you no longer offer along with any information that has since changed. Add new contact information, additional services and products, and upcoming specials as needed.
3. Verify Links
Whether your site contains links for products or additional content, make sure they work. This is especially important for links that appear on popular landing pages. Carefully consider redirecting your readers to other sites. Not only do these links require more upkeep, they can also be hurting more than helping.
4. Check your Sidebars
Are your sidebars distracting the readers from your main content? Advertisements, search forms, and page links are certainly necessary but should not be the focal point of the site. Keep them in check by choosing appropriate sizing and color schemes.
5. Curb the Graphics
While images are important to any good website, make sure that they don’t overwhelm the page. Your graphics should be large enough to be enticing but not so big that your readers need to keep scrolling to read the content.
