Blog writing can be a tedious task when done on a regular basis. One way to make the job easier is by following a systematic approach to curating each and every post. If you are stuck in a blog rut, start fresh by adopting a new, easy plan for success.
Follow these five steps to craft a perfect blog post:
Step 1: Start with a Good Idea – Before you can move onto any other step in the blog writing process, you must first have a good idea. Although it sounds easy enough, this is often the most challenging part for writers. Try these tricks to get your creative juices flowing:
– Take a general idea and discuss one aspect of it
– Read a trade magazine for inspiration on current topics
– Browse the internet for what is hot in your industry
Step 2: Choose the Format & Outline – Once you have a great topic for your post, the next step is to choose an appropriate format. Is it best suited for a pro’s/con’s list, a top ten list, or just a general format. There are hundreds of ways to arrange your piece. Once you decided on the layout, you then want to develop an outline about what you will talk about. Most writers will break their post into three parts and then have subtopics for each. Or some may have a short opening and ending paragraph with a list between the two. The important thing here is to make sure you have enough good subtopics to expand upon.
Step 3: Write the Content – There are few things that can replace the value of good, original content especially when managing a blog. It’s now time to let the words flow. Keep your writing succinct but also interesting and relevant to the topic. Avoid using a ton of industry jargon or acronyms that may be beyond your average reader’s comprehension.
Step 4: Add Links & Images – Related links and quality images can make a simple blog post look more polished and professional. Always make sure your links work and that the images are of high quality. If you are using your own photos take time to edit them to perfection – your readers will appreciate your extra effort.
Step 5: Revise – Never take your first draft and send it out to the world. That baby needs some revision before its fit for others’ eyes. A great tactic to use is to read aloud your post. This helps to find and remove small filler words while allowing you to check the flow of the piece. Some prefer to have others edit their writing for them but many handle it solo. Leaving time between the first draft and revision can also be beneficial.
