One of the best new marketing tools that have taken hold over the last year is live streaming. People love the raw message and unpredictability that a live video feed offers. And it’s a great way to create one-of-a-kind content for your audience.
Today’s arena has three main contenders for marketers to consider: Facebook Live, YouTube Live and Twitter’s Periscope. Which one you choose may be based on personal preference but below are some talking points to consider.
The user interface of each platform can be a big factor in deciding the right one for you. Facebook Live seems to be the simplest option but all have similar features such as “like”, “comment”, and “subscribe” buttons.
Both YouTube Live and Facebook Live allow you to permanently save video once it has been streamed, Periscope is only available for 24 hrs. after it’s broadcast. While some may prefer the flexibility of the long-term access of video, there are circumstances where offering video for a limited time can prove smart.
When and where you can live stream can be a big differentiator when choosing which platform to use. Both Periscope and Facebook Live allow streaming from IOS and Android platforms. YouTube Live only allows streaming from a desktop although that is sure to change soon.
All three platforms are on a level playing field when it comes to camera integration. While allowing for the standard smartphone camera application, all three also lets users integrate a GoPro camera to their live streaming.
Few can argue with the popularity and wide reach that Facebook has. It easily ranks among the most used social media platform out there so choosing it to stream live would be a sure bet. YouTube though can hold its own and comes in a close second. Since Periscope is a standalone service, it falls a little further behind but is boosted by being considered the pioneer of the live streaming phenomenon.
