New Facebook Changes Show the Importance of Identity to Consumers

Facebook recently announced some pretty big changes to the profile feature of their platform. Although the popular social media site has consistently released updates to stay current with trends while responding to needs of their users, few releases have been as identity-focused as this one.

In this new update, Facebook users will find their profile much more easily customizable and based on personal preference. They will also find a better mobile experience for perusing through other people’s profiles. When looking at the changes as a whole, an over-arching theme emerges – the desire for users to fully express their identities online.

Facebook has brought to light what many of us already know – how we view ourselves and how we want others to view us is extremely important. Here are some highlights of Facebook’s recent updates:

It’s All about the Profile Pic – Many of Facebook’s changes are focused on the individual profile picture. Users can now more easily enhance with filters and text while also having the ability to use them temporarily. Yes, you can now put an expiration date on your profile pic.

Your Best Shots Showcased – Facebook is also allowing people to showcase five Featured Photos on their profile. This means users now have a place to put those great photos of themselves.

Customize with Emoji’s – If you have had a dying urge to use emoji characters in your bio, you will soon have a platform to do so. A new bio summary section will allow you to express who you are in 101 characters or less including the quintessential smiley face.

Identity in Motion – The change people are most excited about with Facebook’s newest release is the ability to use an animated photo for your profile picture. While GIF’s are still not supported, you can now have a short looping video play in lieu of the standard static photo.

For marketers, these changes reflect a need for the industry to continue to provide ways for consumers to express themselves online.
